Exploring the Role of Digital Literacy in Mitigating Technostress among Indonesian SMEs

Digital transformation has created both opportunities and psychological challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly technostress arising from rapid technological change. This study explores how digital literacy shapes SME owners' experiences of technostress during digital transformation. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight SME owners in East Java, Indonesia, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings revealed four interrelated themes: (1) digital literacy develops through continuous learning, (2) technostress emerges from technology complexity, information overload, digital risks, and continuous system changes, (3) digital literacy functions as a protective capability by strengthening confidence, problem-solving ability, adaptability, and resilience, and (4) adaptive coping strategies, including social support, self-directed learning, selective technology adoption, and a positive mindset, facilitate sustainable digital transformation. Based on these findings, this study proposes the Digital Literacy and Technostress Adaptation Framework, highlighting digital literacy as a dynamic capability that enhances psychological resilience and supports sustainable digital transformation among SMEs.
